A live public arts intervention that opens dialogue
about the urban environment, posing the question,
‘How do we experience our city?’
Artists from all disciplines react to late night urban phenomena, and engage the audience in active debate around their resident city.
City Running started in Brighton 2006 with a pilot event. It involved, local, national and international artists, and engaged them in late night creative reconnaissance and interventions from the gallery base. Participants included: visual artists, actors, musicians, writers, performance artists, traceurs, architects, graphic designers, photographers, digital artists and sculptors
City Running aims to build audience, programme and a body of work, as well as fostering collaboration between City Runners within the timeframe.
City Running has the proven potential to attract a young and non-arts attending audience.
The City Running team works with the host venue to develop its existing late night audience.
The City Running team works with the host venue to select local artists, and to deliver a complimentary programme of activities for target audiences during the City Running period.
‘Any serious arts venture that tries to lift the level of art production in a city should be supported. Collaborating with Tessa Lewin was great - we have talked for a while about collaborating so this was a great occasion to do our first joint piece. We will be doing more work together as a result. The experience will not change the way I work, but it will add to it. Loved the sense of camaraderie engendered by the show. What came out of the show represented extraordinarily well the experience of living here. More to the point though, it has given me some new ideas...’
